Today I had to buy some supplies for the house. The total came to ~$100.00. I could have gone to the store, but instead I decided to buy the products on Overstock.com. Why? Currently Ebates (internal link) is offering 8% back on orders at Overstock. I’m also an Overstock Gold member so I get 5% back in store credit on every order (it costs $20 a year, but if you don’t make more than $20 in rebates, Overstock picks up the difference to make the effective cost $0.00). But then I also put it on my credit card (which I pay off each month) so I got another 3% back on the purchase price.
All of these rebates are exclusive of each other so they don’t detract from each other. My total rebate for this purchase was $8.00 from Ebates, $5.00 from Overstock, and $3.00 from my credit card (and since I pay off my balance each month, I’m not suffering interest). That is an effective rebate of $16.00 or 16% of the purchase price.
As usual I’m putting that $16.00 into the investment accounts which are right now returning 10% Y/Y.
